Evaluation Q 3

What have you learned from audience feedback?

Pre production audience research:

My chosen target audience was from ages 16-19, so when I sent out this survey to people in that age range, the results were very important to me when it came to my production and planning
Below are some of the results that had the biggest effect on what I aimed to achieve from my video

The results in this question was very important when it came to
deciding what type of music video I wanted to create, as it was direct answers from the demographic of my target audience about what they preferred.  Performance or a mixture between the two was the thing was the most votes.

This is what caused me to create a mainly performance video with elements of narrative included, as a concept video for my chosen genre doesn't represent the stereotypes of what people expect from those videos.

This audience research was important to me as it meant that my video would have a better chance at pleasing the target audience.

When finding secondary research of what my target audience listened to most, the genre was pop. This made me think that if I took some elements of what they liked in a pop video and transferred it into my acoustic video, the overall product would have a more appealing effect to them.
Performance scenes was something that would work well in my video so I included a lot of them.
Nearly 90% of people said they enjoyed performance scenes in a video, therefore this impacted my video in a big way as I felt it was something that would appeal to nearly all of my target audience.

The fact that this had such a sweep for wanting performance scenes, it was the answer I took into account the most when planning my product.
This also worked out well as it is something that is a common convention in my chosen genre and works well with representing the artist.

All my pre production audience research was important to me when planning my video as it helped me finalize certain ideas and taught me what was appealing to my target audience and what wasn't.
Collecting this survey showed me how important audience research is as you will have a much better chance at them enjoying the final product the receive.

Music video multiple choice survey:

I handed this out to a group of 10 people in the age range of my target audience who watched my video.

The results:

Q1 - a) 75% c) 25%

Q2 - a) 40% b) 60%

Q3 - a) 40% b) 30% c) 30%

Q4 - a) 10% b) 50% c) 40%

Q5 - a) 60% b) 30% c) 10%

Q6 - a) 80% b)10% c) 10%

Q7 - a) 70% b) 30%

What I've learnt from this:

The things that had the most positive reception was the performance scenes and artist representation.
I am pleased that my target audience liked this as when I sent out a survey on survey monkey, these were the things that people had voted important, so I made sure I included them in my final video as they appealed to my target audience.

A high percentage also agreed this was the best style for this genre. Picking this style was again helped by secondary research and my pre production audience research.
This planning research helped in planning my final product as I had an idea of what elements to include and the ones I focused on were well received by my audience.

Some of the things that were received differently than I thought they would was my mixture of narrative and performance.
In my audience research it suggested that a mixture between types of music video would be something people would like, however 40% did not like this and 30% said more narrative should have been included.

This response has taught me that I think it would have had the desired effect if I had included a bit more narrative scenes, as one person said when I asked more open questions 'I would have enjoyed the narrative scenes more if they were better explained'

I have learnt that if I was to try and make a hybrid video again I need to keep it clearer and more balanced.

Open questions on magazine and digipak:

Q1)  What do you like about these?

a) '' I like the synergy between the digipak and the magazine advert. There is a recognizable font, colour scheme and artist style that stays constant with them ''

b)  '' How although the images are varied and include lots of different camera angels, they still all link together well and are clear that they are all part of the same thing ''

c)  '' That there is an image of the artist on the CD disk and that the image used goes alongside the others well ''

d)  '' The images used of the artist make him recognizable as they have a variation of shots and include direct address to the camera.  I also like the layering of the images on the front cover as it makes it more interesting to look at ''

Q2)  What do you dislike?

a) ''Although they have synergy, I think the image on the magazine advert and the back of the CD are too similar and should have varied more ''

b) ''The same as A''

c) '' I feel that the magazine advert could have had a bit more information, maybe about tour dates or past albums ''

d) '' I prefer a more simple CD disk style ''

Q3)   After watching the video, do you think these give a good representation of the genre?

a) '' Yes, I think that images including the guitar suggest certain things about the genre of music, which was made clear in the video ''

b) '' I think it does, but I think that the front cover could be mistaken for a more indie pop singer, so maybe if more of the mise - en - scene with his clothing was shown it could give a stronger representation ''

c) '' Yes and I think that the song list names are helpful in giving a representation of the genre ''

Q4)   What could be improved?

a)  '' Maybe use the layering effect on the front cover throughout the images as it defiantly makes them more interesting ''

b) '' The use of special effects on the images instead of just a filter and adjusting lighting and stuff ''

c) ''  Show more of the guitar on the front cover as it gives a better indication of the genre ''

d) '' I think include more promotional info on the magazine advert as it would make it look more professional ''

What I have learnt from this:

I think the most effective thing about these ancillary texts is the synergy throughout the digipak, video and magazine advert. This is something I wanted to achieve as I think it gives a stronger representation of the artist.
I think that my audience received this well as overall they did feel that both the artist and the genre were represented well and that he became someone who was recognizable when looking at any of the different texts.
I also am glad they picked up on the use of different camera angels and how this is able to show different elements of his style.

I think that the things that weren't received as well was the simple magazine advert, so if I were to do this again I would include more industry representation to make it look more real.

Some people also preferred a more simple disk, which was a general convention I was trying to challenge when making this. I like that it is different but I have learnt that if I was going to include a image, maybe include a more simple one, e.g. just a location without the artist in it.
