General conventions of folk/acoustic music videos: 

Strong representation of the artist:


In many videos of this genre, the audiences perception and relationship with the artist is crucial. This is important as the songs tend to include personal themes, so the audience feels a stronger connection to these songs if they can identify with the artist.

Common ways of achieving this include:
Close ups of the artists face & direct address to the camera
Performance shots so viewers see who the vocals are coming from
The representation of a particular style throughout the video

 I have included a mixture of up close and full body performance shots, direct address to the camera and keeping a signature style throughout. All this builds the representation of the artist. 


Focus on location/nature:

When watching videos of this genre, it is evident that a lot of them include rural shots or involve nature in some way. As the stereotype of songs and artists in this genre to be very open, raw and free, outside settings represent this well as they can include lots of bright and wide shots that give the impression of someone being very free.
Mise - en - scene is very important when representing this as at first glance, it instantly fits in with our stereotypes of what is seen in these videos.

In my video I used a range of rural locations to capture the convention of outside location.



Representation of emotion: 

This representation of the artists emotion is very important when it comes to fans connecting with them and identifying with a certain song. 
A common conception and stereotype of songs of this genre is ones that are deep, meaningful and emotional, therefore this is what lots of the fans will be looking for their artist to be like in the video.

Clearly highlights themes of the song: 

I have noticed that lots of videos in this genre may not have a direct emphasis on a story line &narrative but the themes and lyrics are clearly represented to the viewers. This gives them gratification from understanding them and possibly identifying. 

Main ways this is done is by using shots to amplify lyrics.

What have you learned from audience feedback? Pre production audience research:  My chosen target audience was from ages 16-19, so when I sent out this survey to people in that age range, the results were very important to me when it came to my production and planning Below are some of the results that had the biggest effect on what I aimed to achieve from my video                                                        The results in this question was very important when it came to deciding what type of music video I wanted to create, as it was direct answers from the demographic of my target audience about what they preferred.  Performance or a mixture between the two was the thing was the most votes. Dyers star theory Star theory provides a variety of ways to analyse music videos. These ways being: Star persona - Someone whos' image embodies meanings that the audience can instantly recognize.  The image being promoted to an audience in music videos is different than their personal image and identity that isn't in the public eye. An image is constructed for them to make them memorable to the audience but also allows them to be seen as an interesting and unique figure, not just the average person. They become instantly recognizable as an artist and embody a variety of meanings they show through their music and image.  A stars persona can be represented in a variety of ways and through different platforms: A name change to something more interesting than their birth name - giving them a unique edge e.g Rihanna who is actually called Robyn Rihanna Fenty  She also adds to her star persona by a variety of different image changes and different elaborate styles
